The Community Safety CCTV system is owned and operated by London Borough of Hounslow, in partnership with the Metropolitan Police.
The objectives of CCTV in Hounslow are to:
- Help reduce the fear of crime
- Help deter and detect crime
- Support and enhance community safety
- Assist with traffic management
- Assist in supporting civil proceedings
- Discourage anti-social behaviour, including alcohol and drug related issues
- Help and improve the economy of town centres
We also use the CCTV system for:
- Identifying persons wanted by the police as well as locating missing people
- Deter and detect Fly Tipping
- Emergency planning
The CCTV control room operates 24-hours a day seven days a week, which monitors and records images from CCTV systems in streets, off-street car parks, town centres and housing estates in the borough. Our CCTV Operators are fully qualified in Public Space CCTV, Police checked and are Security Industry Registered (SIA).
The images from each camera are recorded continuously. Most of the cameras have full 360 degree pan, tilt and zoom movement. Camera images are shared with the Hounslow Police Control Room. The whole operation is carefully managed and operated under Codes of Practice which protect and preserve personal privacy.
We use CCTV with the retail radio scheme to provide a safer environment. The retail radio scheme puts retailers in radio contact with the police. The retail scheme is Hounslow Business against Crime HBAC. CCTV within town centres gives members of the public the reassurance that they can go about their daily business with confidence, it gives members of the business community added security and sends a clear message to those engaged in crime or anti-social behaviour that they will be caught and prosecuted.
These activities are carried out in accordance with Data Protection Act 1998 Act, Freedom of Information Act 2000 Act and in compliance with the Information Commissioner’s Office CCTV Code of Practice and our CCTV Code of Practice . The cameras are shared use for Community Safety, Housing and Parking & Traffic Enforcement.
