Gareth's blog
Hounslow Council transport planner Gareth Doherty likes to take his work with him wherever he goes.
Each morning Gareth makes the journey in from West Ealing on his bike. If it’s raining, he’ll take the tube part of the way as well.
As part of World Car Free Day, we followed him on the journey to find out more.

“A 30-minute cycle ride in the morning is a nice way to start the day.”
This is Gareth Doherty’s take on his morning commute to Hounslow from West Ealing. “it doesn’t have to be a vigorous workout every time – you can take it at your own pace.”
Gareth moved to Hounslow from Belfast earlier this year and finds that life’s a lot easier without a car.
“It’s much more convenient to live without a car here as the public transport system is a lot more sophisticated and accessible,” he said. “Cycling feels safer due to the infrastructure as well as other road users’ attitudes towards cyclists. Not to mention the money I save from not owning a car!”
Gareth got started through the Try Before You Bike scheme. He hires a bike for £30 a month with the option of buying it further down the line. The price also includes equipment like lights, a helmet and a lock.
The first few journeys may have been a little daunting, but now Gareth looks forward to his daily cycle. And he wants others to join in as well.
“My advice would simply be to give it a try,” said Gareth. “From experience, driving a car and getting stuck in traffic every day can be frustrating and stressful. Even opting to use active travel for your commute once a week, or for part of your journey, would be a positive step.”
He added: Knowing that I’m saving money on the commute and exercising at the same time is a good feeling, and cycling past cars stuck in traffic always puts a smile on my face!”
