Car Free Day 2022 blogs

Leila's blog

As part of our support for World Car Free Day on Thursday, 22 September, we have been following members of Council staff who have chosen to commute to work via alternative modes of transport.

Here graduate transport planner Leila Chaudhari how she uses a bit of everything.

Leila’s Journey

When Lambeth-local Leila started work for Hounslow Council, the first thing she needed to find out was how to get to work.

Her research led her to discover that the tube was the fastest way at just under an hour. Then came the train and then the car.

Instead of relying purely on mechanical transport, Leila decided to mix it up a bit, using her bike, public transport and walking.

I didnt pick the fastest mode,” said Leila, I chose to cycle to the station to get the train to Hounslow. Then I walk the last 12 minutes to Hounslow House.”

I decide to use these modes because cycling and walking first thing in the morning helps me wake up before getting to work and spending most of my day sitting down.”

Leila says its a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors.

She used the Try Before You Bike scheme, which allowed her to get the bicycle she wanted for a reasonable monthly fee.

Leila said: It has been a great investment as I use my bike to run errands, go to the gym and meet friends, which saves a lot of money.”
