Cllr Sukhbir dhaliwal

Councillor Sukhbir Singh Dhaliwal had a long career as a councillor, serving over 21 years in total. First elected to the Council in 1994, he served two terms until 2002 as a Labour councillor for the Cranford Ward.  Re-elected as a Labour councillor for the Heston West Ward from 2006 until 2010, he rejoined the Council at a February 2016 by-election for Cranford Ward, and he represented that ward until his death.

In his long period as a councillor, Councillor Dhaliwal served on the Education Committee, the Central Area Housing Forum, Vice-Chair of the Planning and Transport Committee, the Terminal Five Panel, The Development Control and Highways Sub-Committee, the Unitary Development Plan Panel, the Voluntary Sector Sub-Committee, the Heston and Cranford Area Committee, the Pension Fund Panel and the Revenue Appeals Panel.

He also served on a number of outside bodies including the Association of Metropolitan Authorities Highways Committee, the Capital Transport Committee, the Cranford Combined Charities, the Ealing and Hounslow Parking and Traffic Trust, Hounslow Community Transport, the London Borough’s Transport Committee and the Heathrow Airport Consultative Committee.

The Leader of Hounslow Council, Councillor Shantanu Rajawat, said:

I was deeply saddened to hear of Cllr Dhaliwal’s passing, and I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to his family. He was a man of Cranford and Hounslow and loved by all who knew him.

Cllr. Dhaliwal was a joy to work with; respected by all those who worked with him. He was part of a generation of Councillors who understood that new talent needs to be nurtured so the Council can succeed. He would always be around to offer guidance and support when asked. He was perceptive and thoughtful and able to explain things in a way that made sense.

He was a trade unionist through and through and had an exceptional memory. A career on the buses meant he could direct you across London one bus at a time (and we often tested him on that!)

With a career as a councillor spanning more than twenty years, Sukhbir demonstrated true commitment to public service. Having lived in Cranford since the 1970s, he was well respected and liked by the Cranford community and the loss will be felt acutely.

Councillor Dhaliwal was born in 1949 and moved to Cranford in 1975 where he raised his family and where he lived for the rest of life. He worked as a bus conductor and then bus driver for many years and was a lifelong supporter of the trades’ unions movement.
