How to help others in need

You may want to support people who are self-isolating, especially people without nearby family, elderly people, and people with a disability or long-term health condition such as cancer, diabetes and chronic lung disease. Assistance that supports individual choice and control can be very welcome, although it is always important to pay close attention to the latest government advice concerning close contact.

We recommend that if you are volunteering or wish to help those around you it is important that you stay safe to protect yourself, and those you are helping.

Here are some important steps you should take:

· If you feel at all unwell, do not volunteer

· Wash your hands regularly, especially before and after you deliver any items

· Try to support people who live close to you, so you don't travel longer distances

· Don’t bring people together face-to-face, be mindful of the government’s advice on social distancing and isolating people at greater risk from Covid-19

· If you make a delivery, stay 2 metres away from the person who is in isolation at all times. Place the items outside their door and then step away

· Be careful about how you share personal information about yourself and other people

· Be careful about taking money and how many people may be more vulnerable to fraud at this time

· If you need help, please be aware that there may be some people who will seek to take advantage of the current situation, so please take heed of the following advice:

· Seek help from trusted neighbours and friends, or reputable charities, local advice agencies and established faith organisations

· Only give cash to someone you know and trust

· Do not give your bank card and PIN number to anybody

We will continue to update the information held here so please come back for updates. If you have a specific enquiry related to a vulnerable resident which this page does not help answer, please email EMAIL ADDRESS or call the Council’s dedicated telephone number PHONE
